HEARTWALK
Times Square, NYC _SITU Studio
In fall 2012, Hurricane Sandy pummeled the east coast, leaving a wake of devastated communities whose public infrastructure and housing had been largely destroyed. Notably, this destruction included the classic boardwalks that line the coast and serve as the lifeblood for their communities. In December of that same year, Situ Studio won an annual a competition to design, build, and install a temporary sculpture in Times Square. At the Core of Situ’s design was the idea of using the boardwalk rubble from many of the individual communities who were hit by the hurricane to bring them together through a collective symbol of love.
Heartwalk was designed using parametric algorithms developed in grasshopper to animate simple repeated ipe triangles into a fluid heart shape that seamlessly flows out of the ground.
